Setting Up the School Volunteer Program.
South Carolina State Dept. of Education, Columbia.
This pamphlet provides practical information on using volunteers to lower student/teacher ratios and raise reading and math scores through more individualized instruction during a time of tight district budgets and increased pressure for improved student achievement. The multitude of services which a volunteer program may provide depends upon the needs of the school system, the individual school and the individual teachers, the desire of the school staff and parents for particular volunteer services, and the kinds of professional staff currently available in the schools. Guidelines are provided for establishing a successful program, and recommendations are given for including senior citizen volunteers in such programs. Specific guidelines for tutors are identified, including tips for volunteer tutors, matching student needs with tutor skills, communication between teacher and tutor, and student volunteers as peer tutors.
