Attrition and Retention in the California State University and Colleges.
Daigle, Stephen L.
Student attrition rates and retention efforts in the California State University and Colleges (CSUC) are summarized to assist policymakers and planners. Extensive supplementary materials are also provided, including four questionnaires, campus statistics, and worksheets for predicting withdrawal. Summaries for the 19 campuses of CSUC provide an overview and/or data, information on strategies and problems, and a list of reports. The narrative section also examines: the broader issue of enrollment planning, national and systemwide evidence about causes and consequences of college withdrawal, the more popular approaches to reducing student attrition, and recommendations. Retention and enrollment planning topics include: continuation and graduation rates in CSUC, transfer students, population trends, participation rates, and student workload. Correlates of attrition and retention are evaluated within the following categories: demographic, academic, motivational, and institutional factors. Retention strategies are grouped under the following approaches: research, organizational and procedural efforts, advising, and campus involvement. Finally, five major and five secondary recommendations for campuses and the system are offered, and appendices provide supplemental recommendations. A 27-page bibliography is included. (SW)
