An Evaluative Model for the Development and Implementation of a Microcomputer-Based Communication Aid.
Lowe-Bell, Sena; And Others
The paper examines decisionmaking guidelines for devising a microcomputer-aided augmentative communication device for non-vocal severely handicapped students. Four considerations are addressed: (1) candidates for microcomputer-based augmentative communication devices (motor development, sensory abilities, cognitive development); (2) instruction for operating the device (effects of learned helplessness, manipulative devices); (3) considerations in choice of speech output systems (intelligibility, social acceptability); and (4) the match between the system and the child (a case study illustrating selection of a symbol system). Appended material includes a summary of three demonstrated voice output devices and a description of Blissymbolics. (CL)
