Teachers: Opinions and Status. ERS Educator Opinion Poll.
Educational Research Service, Arlington, VA.
This 1985 Educator Opinion Poll was designed to obtain accurate data on the status, experience, and range of views held by public school teachers. The status and experience questions covered such topics as current class size, number of years of teaching experience, annual salary, eligibility for merit pay, education, professional affiliations, and length of contract year. Opinion questions covered such topics as views on teacher evaluation, ideal class size, effective schools indicators as they applied to each teacher's school, professional development opportunities, goals of education, and preferences for programs to be funded if additional money were to become available to their districts. In addition, items concerning the availability of teacher aides, the level of student achievement in basic skills, and school enrollment were included in an effort to develop a profile of the schools and student bodies. The resulting report, "Teachers--An Overview," is a brief composite portrait of the American teacher as well as similar highlights for elementary school, intermediate level, and high school teachers. The responses of teachers who say they intend to stay in teaching as long as they can are then compared to the responses of teachers who are currently undecided about their professional futures. Following these highlights, the professional and personal characteristics of each group are reported in tabular form. Each table is introduced with comments pointing out some of the major findings. A concluding technical note discusses the limitations of the data. (TE)
