Children's Playground Rhymes, Chants & Traditional Verse. P.E.N. (Primary English Notes) 47.
Primary English Notes (P.E.N.), n47 Oct 1984
The teaching activities presented in this pamphlet focus on children's playground rhymes, chants, and traditional verse. The pamphlet begins with a discussion of children's lack of interest in poetry, a definition of poetry, and suggested ways to approach poetry. Following that, it explores ways to use playground chants and traditional verse: (1) to increase children's enjoyment of language (through tongue twisters and nonsense language); (2) to develop their response to rhyme and rhythm; (3) to provide a basis for children's own writing; (4) to ease the way into reading other forms of literature; and (5) to encourage children to read--through the use of riddles, parodies, fractured nursery rhymes, train chants, and scary stories.
