Robotics in Industrial Arts. Final Narrative Report for the Exemplary Project.

To introduce students to the world of robotics and industrial automation, robotics was introduced to students enrolled in electronics classes in the industrial arts program at St. Amant High School (Louisiana). Three robots, three host microcomputers, and necessary software were purchased. The electronics instructor installed the three robots while the host microcomputers were set up by the vendors. Students learned how the basic principles of electronics relate to robotics and had hands-on experience with industrial robots. A total of 134 male students (no females) participated in the program in the first year, at a total cost of approximately $39,090. Students who evaluated the course (124) rated it very highly and stated that they learned about robotics and liked the course. The staff evaluation committee agreed that the project was a great asset to the industrial arts program because it introduced new technology to a program that had not changed in many years. Recommendations for the future included the acquisition of more robots and more microcomputers, upgrading of the equipment as required by technological changes, and one-month extended employment for the teacher to upgrade the program during the summer. The project committee recommended that robotics be added to the electronics courses at other high schools in the district.
