The first section briefly describes the development of the MTIP, a research-based program dealing with specific issues facing first-year teachers. Section two, which focuses on the beginning teacher, describes classroom management training provided to first-year teachers in the MTIP. The third section, on support teachers, discusses training provided to support teachers in diagnosing and responding to the concerns of first-year teachers, with special emphasis on the first day of school. Section four, on the principal's role in establishing a good beginning, provides information derived from the actions of principals in the MTIP study schools and their suggestions made during later interviews related to helping first-year teachers at the beginning of school.
