Report of the State Commission on Alternative Teacher Certification.
New Jersey State Dept. of Education, Trenton.
Many college graduates who have not gone through the traditional teacher education process seek to become instructors in the public schools, particularly in areas where there exists a shortage of qualified teachers. This report offers a realistic alternative path of entry into teaching with clearly defined stages of development to attract such prospective candidates. Throughout the report, stress is placed on the development of teacher training coalitions composed of members from school districts, institutions of higher learning, regional education centers, social agencies, or private sector organizations. Because of the potentially diverse candidate pool, the concept of "The Professional Support Team" was developed to establish competencies as well as to guide and assess the beginning teacher's progress throughout the school year. It is expected that the alternative field-based proposal presented in this report will take its place beside the more traditional mode of teacher training, perhaps each benefitting from the other. Appendixes contain the charge to the State Internship Panel, a Minority Report by Marroantonio Lacatena, and a Supplemental Report by Edith A. Fulton. (JD)
