A Report of the Curriculum of Early Field Experiences in Selected Teacher Education Programs in Ohio.
Heath, Pearl; Cyphert, Frederick
A study was conducted to provide descriptive data about the nature of pre-student teaching field experiences occurring in undergraduate elementary teacher education programs in Ohio. The study also examined the context in which early field experiences were provided, and determined relationships among selected institutional variables and types of early field experiences. Data were collected from 178 faculty members on: faculty background, field site characteristics, institutional characteristics, and provision of teaching and non-teaching experience for prospective teachers. Results of data analysis indicate that, as teacher education institutions provide programs which emphasize knowledge and skill development through early field experiences, classroom teachers are assuming important roles in the guidance and supervision of preservice teachers. One way to improve early field experiences is to provide training for cooperating teachers and to develop strong school-university relationships. (CB)
