When Children Play. Proceedings of the International Conference on Play and Play Environments (Austin, TX, June 29-July 2, 1983).
Frost, Joe L., Ed.; Sunderlin, Sylvia, Ed.
This book is a compilation of 47 wide-ranging papers presented at the International Conference on Play and Play Environments. The introduction reviews both the historical recognition of the value of play by various philosophers and educators and the historical disregard for childhood that has prevailed through the centuries, particularly in emerging industrialized nations. An explanation of the mission to promote positive understanding, research, and stimulating play environments is delineated. Specific topics covered include the following: six articles in Part 1 on "Understanding Play"; five articles in Part 2 on "Play, Learning, and Development"; eleven articles in Part 3 on "How Children Use Playgrounds"; ten articles in Part 4 on "Trends in Designing and Developing Playgrounds"; four articles in Part 5 on "Indoor Play Environments and Play Materials"; eight articles in Part 6 on "The Role of Adults in Promoting Play"; and three articles in Part 7 on "Play as an Assessment Tool."
