An Action Resarch Proposal: Identifying and Addressing Problems Related to RACC's Writing Laboratory. Title III Curriculum Enrichment Activity: Faculty Development Project. Final Report.
Horner, Annette; Jacobson, Karen H.
An action research project was undertaken to understand how the Writing Laboratory at Reading Area Community College (RACC) defines and accomplishes its work, what faculty and students expect of the lab, and how they make use of it. The investigation sought to foster discussion and reflection on the appropriate role and staffing of a college writing center; initiate and nurture dialogue between college faculty and writing lab staff; identify and articulate problems relating to RACC's writing lab; and initiate a process and outline a strategy to address identified problems. Separate surveys were developed and distributed to 30 full-time and 40 part-time instructors, a sample of 80 RACC students, and all individuals using the lab. The results from the surveys, based on responses from 29 faculty members, 69 students, and 15 lab users, included the following: (1) the task of the writing lab was not articulated; (2) work roles and responsibilities often went undefined; (3) the referral process was unclear; (4) teachers did not seem to refer students in any consistent way; and (5) the lab was organizationally isolated from direct contact with students and faculty. The study report includes recommendations for addressing the problems revealed by the investigation, and the survey instruments. (EJV)
