Administering the Small College Program: A Theme Issue.

Drawn from a l985 conference focusing on curriculum for small college speech communication programs, the articles in this journal issue deal with issues related to curriculum development and enrichment in small colleges. Articles in the first section discuss chairing the small department. Specific topics addressed include speech communication departments and the "college of character," the small college environment, administrative style, departmental administration, problems confronting speech communication faculty, and developing an Anglo-American communication program. Articles in the second section deal with five administrative issues: staffing the small department, program evaluation, curriculum development, co-curricular programs, and faculty development. Among the specific topics discussed are the following: small college teaching as a career option, strategies for seeking employment in the small college, achieving success in small colleges, the speech tutor program, external evaluation of small college communication programs, conducting a departmental review, teaching the basic course from a theme perspective, the theatre program of limited size, the small college director of forensics, and integrating forensics into the speech curriculum.
