The first in a series of program documents from the Mississippi State Department of Education, this document describes, in an overview, the purpose of the reading improvement program: to provide primary grade teachers with support--assistant teachers--that strengthens instructional processes, especially in reading, on a daily basis. The document also discusses legislation concerning the Mississippi Reading Improvement Program, criteria for the selection of assistant teachers, program application procedures and processes, and the time line for the development and delivery of reading program components. The appendixes include a reading proficiency test; a language arts proficiency test; methods for determining oral reading proficiency; criteria for assessing proficiency in writing skills; a proofreading test containing the test copy, the correct test copy, and a corrected test copy; a description of the role of the assistant teacher that includes the duties and responsibilities of the position; and a program application form.
