Focusing on instruction in the English language arts by students for whom English is a second language, this yearbook contains the papers from the precongress institute, "Reading English in Asia," of the tenth International Reading Association World Congress on Reading--held in Hong Kong in 1984. Ng; "Assessment of the Cloze Reading Technique in Placement Testing," by Siriporn Limtrakarn; and "Contextual Reading," by Young Ja Lee. Part 3 contains "Reading-Based Intensive Course in English for Foreign Students," by Lourdes M. Dias; "An Analysis of the Cultural Influences in the Grammar of the English Short Stories and Poems of the Palanca Awards First Prize Winners 1965-1970," by Patria G. Aranas; and "A Comparison of Study Skill Attitudes of Asian and American Students," by Carmen J. Carsello. The bylaws of Literacy and Languages in Asia are included. (EL)
