Technical Theatre Project. Final Report 1984-85.
Meyer, George
A project was conducted to enhance the vocational training program of approximately 300 students enrolled in carpentry/general building construction, electrical/electronics, and cosmetology courses by introducing them to possible career opportunities available in the technical theater field. The program was conducted through Somerset County and Mercer County vocational-technical schools in New Jersey. A part-time project director was selected for the six-month program, and a series of three workshops were given to introduce vocational teachers to the technical theater craftspersons participating in the project, to plan jointly the student workshops, and to identify methods of introducing training in these areas into their curricula. Following the teacher workshops, a two-day orientation session was held for interested students. Approximately 180 students participated in an intensive, five-day "hands-on" skills building workshop in one of three areas: set design and construction, audio and lighting technical work, or makeup. Evaluation of the project produced some changes, such as the shortening of some of the hands-on workshops from the planned five days to better accommodate the students' schedules and plans to shorten the orientation session from two days to one to hold students' interest better. The project was considered valuable by the instructors, teachers, and those students who were interested in the field, although the project did not hold the attention of those students with less interest.
