Social Studies Program Evaluation.
McDaniel, Patrick; And Others
Intended to identify needs and priorities regarding social studies instruction in Albuquerque Public Schools, guide social studies program development and implementation, and provide guidelines for the adoption of textbooks and materials, the results of a six-year cycle of curriculum planning are presented. Included in the report are an administrative summary and an overview of the purpose of the evaluation, evaluation design and methodology, and a program description. The most extensive section, program description, includes four subsections dealing with (1) goals of the social studies program, (2) content of the program, (3) methods and materials in social studies instruction, and (4) effectiveness of the program. The goals subsection considers the choice of goals, the role of social studies in meeting the broad goals of education, consensus about identity and significance of social studies, congruence of program goals with priorities, comparison with national goals, and the process of establishing goals. The content subsection covers the ideal and actual programs taken by students; familiarity with the program by students, teachers, and parents; the adequacy of resources; the extent to which content reflects goals; and the rationale behind the program. The methods and materials subsection covers instructional materials and teaching methods utilized. The effectiveness subsection evaluates methods of assessing the effectiveness of the program, attitudes, and outcomes. Recommendations and appendices covering courses taught in high school and a partial listing of textbooks used in social studies classes concludes the document. (IS)
