A description is provided of "Behavioral Patterns in Mental Health and Mental Illness--Adults," a course for nursing and psychiatric technician students on psychopathology, the dynamics of psychiatric disorders, and the behavioral patterns associated with these disorders. A glossary of instruction-related terms is followed by a course description, which lists major course goals and long-range course objectives; course units; materials of instruction, including required texts, supplemental materials, resources, and audio- visual materials; and notes on the course. The bulk of the paper consists of descriptions, goals, objectives, reading lists and sample test items for each of the following units: (l) Introduction to Behavioral Patterns in Mental Health and Mental Illness; (2) Observation and Understanding of Behavior; (3) Introduction to Maladaptive Behavioral Patterns and Approaches to Treatment; (4) Anxious Behavior; (5) Withdrawn/Schizophrenic Behavior; (6) Depressed Behavior; (7) Suicidal Behavior; and (8) Suspicious/Paranoid Behavior. The final sections explain how students will be evaluated, provide sample final exam questions, present the grading system, and outline procedures for revising the course. Additional information on performance evaluation criteria is appended. (LAL)
