A profile is presented in this report of Project HELP (Higher Education Learning Package), a liberal arts instructional program alternative developed to assist high-risk, first-time community college students, with multiple deficiencies in reading, writing, and computational skills, to succeed and continue in college. Introductory material provides information on the two semester general education program consisting of two packages or options (totalling twenty-four units); describes the course content of the HELP program; highlights the program's objectives; and provides a history of the program between 1977 and 1978. Next, the evaluation report for 1981, the fourth year of implementation of the HELP project, is presented. This report describes the students involved in the HELP program, using profiles and case studies; discusses the implications of the HELP student profile for learning and teaching; describes how HELP students are taught; provides information on the kind of learning that takes place; examines the relationship of student achievement to the HELP program goals; and outlines plans for the future. Finally, the report discusses the transportability of the program. Student evaluation data and enrollment statistics are appended. (HB)
