Intersectional Grade Distribution Analysis. SAIR Conference Paper.
Bottomley, Wayne N.; Leonora, Arnold B.
Differences in grades received by students in different sections of the same college course were evaluated at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in fall 1983 and compared to spring 1983 findings. After determining grades for each section of a particular course, the chi-square test for "k" independent samples was applied to the data to determine if there were statistically significant differences in grade distributions by section. In fall 1983, 26.6 percent of all courses had significant differences in the outcome distribution of grades between sections. This is an increase of 12.5 percent compared to spring term 1983 findings. While some of the differences may be due to unusual differences in student groups between sections, some may result from different presentations of material or through different evaluation and grading procedures. It is suggested that colleges should enforce measures designed to give students a fair and equivalent opportunity for a grade in a course regardless of the section, thus ensuring a reasonable level of consistency both in instructional content and in evaluation practices. An array of data tables are appended. (SW)
