Whitman, Ruth
Suggestions directed to parents and family members for turning everyday home activities into opportunities for learning are based on three principles: reading and researching; reinforcement and reward; and review and reapplication. It is proposed that establishing a good home learning environment includes setting regular, daily times to work with children; creating a workplace; arranging time to talk with children; setting an example; keeping good research sources handy and encouraging children to read and investigate; and using radio and television wisely. Younger children need brief, rewarding activities and must not be pushed too hard. Basic principles of parent-child interaction and specific activity suggestions using common family or home tasks to support and reinforce learning are given for the subject areas of reading, math, writing and penmanship, and science.
