Socialization Activities Handbook for Students in Special Education. Revised Edition.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Div. of Special Education.
Designed for use by special education teachers, the handbook provides activities to help students develop the socialization skills necessary for success in mainstreamed settings. The materials focus on concepts the students must master to be successful in general education classes. Three modules are presented: (1) self esteem (including recognition of the student's own and others' attributes and unique personal backgrounds); (2) sharing (including sharing materials and feelings with peers); and (3) cooperation (including working with individuals or small groups on non-academic and academic tasks). Each unit is briefly defined and includes anecdotal material. Each page of activities has symbols in the margins, denoting activities that require one or more of the following: pocket expenses, supplies found in schools, additional teacher preparation time, and non-commercial materials.
