VAKT for Basic Subtraction Facts.
Thornton, Carol A.; Toohey, Margaret A.
Guidelines are presented for modifying basic instruction of subtraction facts for elementary level learning disabled students. A detailed case study is used to illustrate a five-step structured program: (1) find a way to work it out; (2) add to check; (3) learn the partner facts; (4) study families of facts; (5) review and practice. The selection of appropriate sequences, techniques, and activities that incorporate students' learning strengths is emphasized. Appendix A lists specific strategies for modifying activities to meet individual learning needs (auditory, visual, kinesthetic/tactile) and address receptive, expressive, and abstract reasoning difficulties. Appendix B offers memorization strategies tailored to auditory, visual, and kinesthetic/tactile learners. Activities using mechanical aids (calculator, language master, tape recorder) are described in Appendix C, while Appendix D suggests activities to help children speed up their responses once they have mastered strategies. Management strategies for teacher and child, described in Appendix E, focus on organization and use of facts, application of basic facts to computation, self-management (staying on task), and record keeping.
