What Now? Practical Suggestions for Parents of Hearing Impaired Children.
Alberta Dept. of Education, Edmonton. Special Educational Services Branch.
The handbook was designed to offer practical suggestions for parents of hearing impaired children in the areas of home, communication, school, community, and equipment. A section on home management considers such topics as the child's independence, behavior, hobbies, and clubs and groups. Communication ideas offer suggestions for activities to stimulate expressive and receptive language skills. The school is viewed in terms of placement, parent participation, and postsecondary educational planning. Ways in which parents can expose their children to and integrate them in the community are noted. Equipment suggestions focus on selection and maintenance of hearing aides as well as such other equipment as telephones, cameras, and safety devices. A glossary and resource listings are provided, giving organizations that: (1) offer assessment, diagnostic, educational and support services in Alberta; (2) offer postsecondary education in Canada and the United States; or (3) publish materials or manufacture equipment of interest to the hearing-impaired.
