Deinstitutionalization of the Mentally Retarded.
Cortez, Patricia
Literature on deinstitutionalization of mentally retarded persons is reviewed. Cited are studies showing positive aspects, including improved communication abilities, increased adaptive behavior and personal satisfaction. Community adjustment findings focus on effects of involuntary relocation to another facility, age differences, and reinstitutionalization. Studies of variables related to community placement failure are noted; these include caretaker experience and resident age, I.Q., and level of adaptive behavior. A review of national trends in deinstitutionalization shows substantial increases in releases from large institutions along with even more rapid increases in readmissions. Also noted is the emergence of a countertrend toward institutionalization, and the suggestion that there may be no significant difference between institution size per se and quality of care. (CL)
