Technical Writing Style: Attitudes towards Scientists and Their Writing.
Wales, LaRae H., Ed.; And Others
A study was conducted to determine the technical writing style that scientists prefer. The respondents--l089 scientists from agricultural experiment stations, 20 station editors, and 59 editors of scientific publications--completed a questionnaire requesting biographic information and reactions to a simplified style of writing and a difficult style, typical of that found in scientific journals. While most respondents indicated that they preferred the simplified style, they tended to think highly of scientists who write in the more complicated style. (Tables of findings accompany the text, and appendixes contain a list of the journals whose editors were surveyed and tables expanding the results according to presentation order of the writing samples.)
