Conflict and Consensus in Zoned and Suburban Newspapers.
Salsini, Paul
The zone sections of the Milwaukee "Journal" that go to the northeastern suburbs in Milwaukee County were compared with the community papers that originate in those suburbs in order to investigate the use of conflict and consensus news in zone sections. Hypotheses were constructed to test the validity of assumptions that there would be (1) more conflict news in the zone sections than in the suburban papers, (2) more consensus news in the suburban papers than in zone sections, (3) more conflict news on the front page of the zone sections than on the front page of the suburban papers, and (4) more "knowledge about" information in the zone sections than in the suburban papers. Among the findings were that zone sections used less conflict news and more consensus news than suburban papers, conflict news in suburban papers took up almost twice the space occupied by conflict news in zone sections, and zone sections provided analysis in addition to factual information for all of the conflict information they used.
