The responses of 422 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students were analyzed in a survey that sought (1) to determine what poems selected for the survey were most enjoyed by the students; (2) to analyze the most popular poems considering such characteristics as the form, content, certain poetic elements, and age of the poem; and (3) to determine any relationships between children's choices and grade level, sex, and type of school setting. The 113 poems selected for the study were suggested by five consultants: two professors of children's literature, two upper elementary grade teachers, and Helen K. Mackintosh, a pioneer investigator of children's poetry preferences. Among the findings were the following: (1) children's poetry choices had remained stable and consistent throughout the years; (2) there was a preference for poems written in narrative form; (3) if poems were difficult to understand, they were disliked; (4) in addition to humorous content, familiar experience and animals were particularly enjoyable; (5) contemporary poems with modern content were preferred over traditional poems; and (6) favorite poems usually contained more than one popular characteristic.
