A Manual for Promoting Positive Alternatives to Adolescent Pregnancy. Better Beginnings for Virginia's Children.
Poe, Elisabeth S.; And Others
This guide advocates an alliance among diverse groups for the purpose of decreasing the incidence of adolescent pregnancy and improving the outcome of pregnancies that do occur. It provides useful information for communities interested in developing pregnancy prevention activities. Statistics about adolescent pregnancies are given and the physical, cognitive, and social development of adolescents is examined. Medical, social, and economic consequences of adolescent parenthood are discussed, along with the consequences for the children of teenage parents. A chapter on program planning addresses the problems of needs assessment, forming program goals and objectives, choosing strategies, and identifying resources. A sampling of research findings is included and sex education, family planning services, contraceptive use, second pregnancies, adoption, and abortion are discussed. The need for program evaluation is examined and various types of evaluation are identified. A section on coalition formation gives steps for forming a coalition and guidelines for coalition meetings. Ways of marketing prevention and of dealing with the media are discussed. The final chapter describes existing programs designed to address the problems of adolescent pregnancy prevention and programs that attempt to improve the outcome of those pregnancies which do occur.
