Teaching about War, Peace, Conflict and Change: A Self-Assessment and Planning Process.
United Ministries in Education, Valley Forge, PA.
A guide to help colleges examine teaching and inquiry in the area of war, peace, conflict, and change is presented. The self-study of educational activities may be coordinated by the campus minister or a faculty member. The following broad areas of inquiry are identified, along with specific questions: international conflict, the U.S. role in world affairs, the understanding of other cultures and political and economic systems, the nature of social change, the exercise of power, and skills and dynamics of citizen involvement in social and political institutions. The value of the following principles of higher education on the self-study is also considered: academic freedom, the college's responsibility for promoting student development, the college's public responsibility, and educating the whole person. A list of the sequence of events for the self-study is provided, along with an outline of the responsibilities of the survey team and the team that will implement the assessment. Also outlined are objectives and activities of introductory and followup colloquia that support the assessment process. Supplementary materials include: cognitive, affective, and practical goals worksheets for departments/programs and course/activities; and checklists and questions to evaluate the coverage of the inquiry areas by courses.
