New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Div. of Curriculum and Instruction.; New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Div. of Special Education.
The handbook presents guidelines and suggestions for the use with handicapped students of the cloze procedure, a method for systematically deleting words from a prose passage and evaluating the reader's success in supplying them. Chapter 1 considers the use of the cloze procedures for assessment purposes and notes the differences between cloze passage tests, and informal reading inventories, and achievement tests. Suggestions are also offered for constructing cloze tests. Chapter 2 focuses on ways to teach the closure concept in each of four developmental stages (concrete experience, two-dimensional level, symbolic stage, and application of the cloze procedure to individualized education programs) and presents sample activities for lesson planning. The final chapter summarizes New York state policy regarding tests of reading competency. (CL)
