Special Education: A Statistical Report for the 1982-1983 School Year and the 1980-1981 and 1981-1982 School Years.
The two reports compiled here are intended as aids in evaluating and planning future educational efforts for handicapped students in New Jersey. The reports include a census of handicapped pupils, their programs, the service delivery personnel and special education due process cases for the 1980-81, 1981-82, and 1982-83 school years. Each report contains tables of statistical data for such categories as: enrollment by classification and age (public and private schools); number of preschool handicapped pupils in Federal programs; staffing patterns; numbers of new classifications, referrals, evaluations and declassification; and due process reviews and hearings. An introduction to the 1982-83 report summarizes statistical trends in special education for the 1982-83 school year. These trends include a steady increase in the number of pupils classified as perceptually impaired, no identifiable age peaks in classifications that are primarily physiologically based but significant age peaks in other classifications, male representation in handicap classifications more than twice that of females, and a pattern of prevalence rates for males and females that varies both with the particular handicap and the racial/ethnic grouping.
