Urban Gateways Arts for Learning Program. Chapter 1 ECIA Selection, 1983-1984. [and] Urban Gateways Artist-in-Residence Programs.
Urbana Gateways, Chicago, IL.
Two documents are combined. The first describes the Arts for Learning program provided by Urban Gateways, a Chicago-based, nonprofit arts and education organization that serves as a resource for schools in six Illinois counties. Urban Gateways provides the resources to make the arts an integral part of the learning process in elementary and secondary schools, combining student, teacher, parent and community involvement. After an introduction (part I), part II of this report describes the program's objectives and part III outlines the components provided to participating schools. These components include (1) the artist in residence program, (2) field trips, (3) in-school performances, (4) parent workshops, (5) teacher inservice workshops, (6) out-of-school cultural events, (7) school orientation meetings, (8) ongoing and summative evaluation, and (9) curriculum materials and supplies. Part IV discusses the responsibilities of principals, in-school program coordinators, participating teachers, and outsiders (parents or community representatives) in schools that participate in the Arts for Learning program. The remaining material in this report consists of procedural guidelines for participation, reimbursement, and obtaining teacher stipends; descriptions of various program options; and a chronological history of Urban Gateways since its inception in 1961. The second document report contains brief descriptions of workshops available to students in the Chicago metropolitan area under the Urban Gateways program. The workshops, conducted by "resident artists," are divided into five thematic areas: (1) creative writing residencies; (2) dance and movement residencies; (3) music residencies; (4) theatre residencies; and (5) visual arts residencies.
