Resource Monograph on Middle-Grade Students.
New York State Education Dept., Albany.
Written in response to requests from local school districts in New York State, this document provides information about the middle grades (grades 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) and the changing nature of students in these grades. The first section reports results of studies on this difficult developmental period that were conducted by three New York school districts and by other researchers. Research on the effects on middle-grade adolescents of grade organization, homogeneity of pupil population, and organizational climate is summarized in a table. The second section reports the conclusions, recommendations, and observations of two school districts regarding the best way to educate young adolescents. Recommendations are also reported from other research studies. Final remarks in this section concern ways to evaluate individual learning styles and use this information to improve individual performance. Finally, schools and educators are urged to keep abreast of current research on the nature of adolescents and to use the results of recent studies to assure that each adolescent receives the best education possible. An annotated bibliography of 29 items on the middle-grade student is appended. (CB)
