The degree of communication between the film industry and educators and its effect on the future directions of environmental education films are the focus of this report. Separate surveys were mailed to 100 film industry producers and distributors and 150 elementary and secondary educators in Maine, Kansas, Pennsylvania, California, and Alabama. An introduction, literature review, and description of the methodology are followed by an extensive report of the study results, which are based on a 21 percent return from the film community and a 44 percent return from the educational community. Tables for each survey question show percentage, mean ranking, and separate results from the film industry and the educational population as to their opinions on educational film topics, length, quality, audience range, markets for films, film concepts, selection purposes, formats, and so on. Conclusions indicate a serious lack of communication between the educational and film communities in regard to environmental education films. Appendices contain information on the National Association for Environmental Education 1983 film festival; copies of the two questionnaires used; a 17-item selected bibliography; and a 6-page bibliography on environmental education films for elementary schools, as well as media usage, film production, and film resource materials.
