The report is an outgrowth of a study of three residential schools operated by the Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS). The schools are the Illinois Children's School and Rehabilitation Center (ICSRC), for severely physically handicapped or health-impaired, the Illinois School for the Deaf, and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. The three schools are evaluated separately along dimensions of administration, admissions procedures, student population characteristics, programing, personnel and budget, and grounds and buildings. Issues and recommendations for future programing are also listed for each school. Among recommendations offered regarding the ICSRC are program modifications to reflect additional emphasis on health maintenance and rehabilitation programing, agreements with independent living centers to prepare for transitions from ICSRC, and enhanced programing in computer-assisted instruction. The Illinois School for the Deaf report includes recommendations for collaboration to provide comprehensive programing, more planned interaction with vocational rehabilitation, and research on computer assisted instruction. Among recommendations offered for the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired are expansion of independent living facilities, establishment of a summer educational program for deaf-blind students, and provision of resource services to families in cooperation with local schools.
