Handbook for the Volunteer Tutor. Second Edition.
Rauch, Sidney J., Ed.; Sanacore, Joseph, Ed.
Intended for use by volunteer tutors who work one-on-one with individuals, this handbook offers information related to successful volunteer programs. The first chapter of the handbook provides a foundation for training volunteer tutors by discussing important qualities for successful reading programs and topics to be considered for instructional sessions for tutors. The second chapter offers insights about establishing a positive tutor-student relationship, while the third highlights the importance of evaluating students' reading difficulties. In addition, this chapter describes aspects of group assessment and emphasizes factors involved in individual diagnosis. The fourth chapter deals with basic teaching procedures for tutors, and the fifth covers aspects of teaching decoding skills and word recognition techniques. The sixth chapter describes eight comprehension skills, discusses prerequisites to effective comprehension, and provides suggestions for teaching comprehension, while the seventh concerns prior knowledge, writing, and metacognition. The eighth chapter presents strategies for organizing the volunteer tutor program, and the ninth lists resources for volunteer tutors and provides a directory of publishers. (FL)
