Spanning the Generations: Independent Aging Program's High School Volunteers in Action.
Cristina, Marilou
This paper describes the Intergenerational Program, a high school volunteer program which matches students with older adults who receive help and companionship through the Independent Aging Program (San Jose, California). The history of the student program is reviewed, and the steps involved in establishing the program are outlined. Recruitment of students and clients and the matching process are described, and the far-reaching impact of the program on both the older persons and the student volunteers is discussed. The remainder of the guide provides a narrative to a slide presentation describing the program, an expansion chart with a breakdown of volunteer services, a chart outlining steps in implementing the program, a samle form for a volunteer's confidentiality statement, an emergency procedures guide, and a publicity announcement for the program.
