Expanding Options. Facilitator's Guide--Student Workshop.

This guide provides procedures and supporting materials for conducting a training workshop on sex equity which is intended to expand awareness and knowledge of the effects of sexism and to increase sex-affirmative behavior in the educational environment. Divided into nine sessions, the workshop is targeted at students in junior and senior high school. Sessions 1 and 2 are organized to increase student awareness of sexism and sex-role stereotyping, and to help students identify specific examples while developing a shared vocabulary. The next five sessions emphasize increased student knowledge about issues of sex equity (the legal aspects, the limiting effects of sex-role expectations, socialization agents, women and men in the labor force, and language and sexism). The final two sessions are designed so that teacher and students can clarify and share ideas and opinions about sex equity. In addition to describing session-by-session procedures, this guide also includes mini-lectures, activity guides, handout materials for the participants (assessment instruments, activity cards, readings, and worksheets), and transparency masters.
