Success in the Urban Setting: Ohio's Urban Demonstration Projects.
Ohio State Dept. of Education, Columbus.
The Urban Demonstration Projects (UDP) combined rehabilitative, preventive, and developmental services in a coordinated school and community effort to test the impact of a maximal educational program for disadvantaged students in Ohio's urban schools. This report, which was prepared by staff members from the various projects throughout the State, includes an introductory description of UDP projects and implementation strategies undertaken in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo. Eight areas, defined by staff as critical to the improvement of urban schools, are discussed: (1) policymaking and decentralized decisionmaking practices in an urban school system (theory and practice); (2) planning, development, and evaluation; (3) curriculum and instruction; (4) learning environment; (5) noninstructional services for students; (6) personnel and staff development; (7) community and public relations; and (8) business and finance.
