Voter Education Manual for Secondary Schools and a Teacher's Guide to Student Handouts in the Voter Education Manual.
Balasco, Alfred P.; And Others
This classroom guide instructs secondary school students about the registration process, the voting process, and the importance of the American electoral system. The goal is to encourage students to participate in the electoral process. Although the guide focuses most heavily on the specifics of voter education in Rhode Island, it is also applicable to other states. The four units cover the following topics: the importance of voting, procedures for registering to vote, the use of the voting machine, and how to run for office. Each unit includes a glossary of pertinent terms, a variety of suggested activities, and points for discussion. The appendices provide several sections of supplementary readings for those teachers who wish to pursue a more complete coverage of selected political issues, including the role of the media, the two party system, voting patterns, and special interest groups. Eighteen student handouts corresponding to the first three units in the "Voter Education Manual" for secondary schools are provided in an appended volume. Topics are the importance of voting, the registration process, and the voting process. Activities include unscrambling letters to find the appropriate word to complete sentences, finding words embedded in a puzzle, question and answer sheets, copies of newspaper articles and advertisements about issues dealing with the electoral process, and an exercise asking students to evaluate media coverage. Answers to the exercise are provided in a separate section. (IS)
