Chapter I Mathematics Program, 1983-84. Report of Evaluation.
Tompkins, John F.
This report provides an evaluation of the Chapter I mathematics program for 1,020 first through eighth grade students in the Des Moines Independent Community School District. Included is a description of the program, information on program budget and expenditures, and narrative accounts of the attainment of 17 performance and process objectives. These objectives focus on administration, student performance, instructional processes, and family performance. Selected results show that: (1) students in grades 2-8 displayed gains in the mathematics score between pre- and post-testing with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills; (2) seventh and eighth grade students (N=204) displayed more positive attitudes toward learning after participating in the program; (3) students achieved mastery of over 82 percent of the objectives introduced to them in individual educational plans; and (4) Chapter I mathematics teachers did an outstanding job of contacting parents of students served. Among recommendations offered is the suggestion that the program administration stress the importance of maintaining and improving the attendance rate of students in the secondary mathematics program. (Budget and expenditure data, principal's report of Chapter I instruction, self-anchoring attitude scale, parent activities needs assessment form, and parent survey questionnaire are included in the appendices.)
