Development and Implementation of a Television Series for Parent Education on Early Childhood Youngsters.

This practicum report concerns the creation of a unique, yet universal, instructional tool for the education of parents of young children in Dover Township, New Jersey. With the approval of the local school system in which a cable television studio was located, a total of 11 half-hour shows were introduced. Local, school, and community members with expertise in the field of early childhood were interviewed by the author. Interviews were taped in the studio and on location to add depth to the program content. The areas of discipline, curriculum, child abuse, giftedness and talentedness, storytelling, home learning activities, computers, speech and language, self-esteem, and the developmental stages of children were examined. In a field test of the effectiveness of the series, groups of students, teachers, school administrators, and others interested in early childhood education viewed and rated pilot programs. Parents of local school children were solicited for home viewer responses. Results indicated that the goal of increasing parents' awareness and understanding of young children was met. Appendices include the rating scale used by viewers, a catalog of programs, program announcements sent to local school children, and handouts accompanying the programs. (Author/CB)
