This eight-module unit was designed to acquaint the grantsperson with the proposal-writing process in relationship to the proposal narrative. Each module states its goal and objectives, and most discuss teaching strategies and include handouts. Module I, "Learning the Language of Grantsmanship," includes a pre- and post-test, a study guide, and a glossary of terms. Module II, "Functions and Principles of the Grant Proposal," discusses proposals and funding, the functions of the proposal, basic principles of proposal writing, and major components of proposals to government agencies and private foundations. Module III, "The Why Section of the Proposal," offers guidelines for the following components: the title page or cover sheet, abstract or proposal summary, introduction, problem statement or needs assessment, and rationale. Module IV, "The What Section of the Proposal," looks at how to write the program objectives section. In module V, "The How Section of the Proposal," guidelines are provided for sections dealing with program activities or methods, program management, program evaluation, dissemination, and the appendices. Module VI, "Future Funding and the Proposal Budget," includes information on funding requests and preparing a budget. Module VII presents "A Sample Proposal and Critique." Module VIII, "Evaluating a Proposal," provides a proposal checklist and evaluation form. Appendices include: a proposal development checklist, criteria for proposal review, and examples of shortcomings found in disapproved research grant applications. (LAL)
