One section of a spring 1979 Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) survey on communication in Association of Research Libraries (ARL) institutions examined how members exchange information with external groups including the university administration, faculty, users, support groups, other libraries, and the profession in general. According to the 68 respondents, most external communication focuses on three concerns: obtaining support for library programs and services from university administrators and legislators, fostering effective use of the library, and promoting the community's awareness and support of the library's resources. The kit comprises: (1) statistical results of the section of the SPEC survey on external communications; (2) relevant policies, procedures, and recommendations from University of Rochester, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Temple University, and the Center for Research Libraries; (3) examples of communication with university administration and faculty committees from Brown University, Michigan State University, and Pennsylvania State University; (4) examples of library programs and newsletters from University of Pennsylvania, University of California-Berkeley, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Michigan State University, and Florida State University; (5) faculty-staff questionnaires from Syracuse University, Brown University, and Florida State University; and (6) examples of communication with library users, including minutes from a Pennsylvania State University student library advisory committee; examples of publications from University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, Duke University, and University of Pennsylvania; and user surveys from Northwestern University, Washington University, Queen's University, Syracuse University, Iowa State University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
