Internal Communication: Policies and Procedures. SPEC Kit 54.
Association of Research Libraries, Washington, DC. Office of Management Studies.
In the spring of 1979, the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) conducted a survey to identify common practices, approaches, and problems related to communication in Association of Research Libraries (ARL) institutions. Survey responses were received from 75 of the 105 ARL libraries; the responses and statistical results are included in this kit, which focuses on centralized library-wide policies and communication downward from top management to staff. A concise summary of the survey is followed by: (1) examples of library policies and procedures from Wayne State University, Northwestern University, and Joint University Libraries; (2) reports and recommendations from Johns Hopkins University, University of Rochester, University of Connecticut, University of California-Los Angeles, Joint University Libraries, Temple University, Purdue University, University of Massachusetts, and Duke University; and (3) a discussion of staff newsletters for libraries and samples of newsletters dealing with communication issues from University of Pennsylvania, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Joint University Libraries, Florida State University, University of Colorado, McGill University, University of Georgia, Iowa State University, and Rice University. The concise summary that introduces this collection focuses on communication policies, internal publications, staff meetings, and trends and issues. (THC)
