Reclassification Survey Results. SPEC Kit 16.
Association of Research Libraries, Washington, DC. Office of Management Studies.
This kit presents the results of a survey conducted by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in 1974 to investigate and document various experiences of academic and research libraries in reclassifying portions of collections or entire collections and the relationship between libraries' particular classification schemes on effective participation in cataloging networks. Of the 73 libraries responding to the survey, 62% reported having undergone a reclassification project in the past 15 years. A detailed analysis of the responses provides information and data on the nature of reclassification efforts, incentives for reclassifying, various cost analysis methods for reclassification projects, problems incurred by split collection operations, identification of the various networks in which responding libraries participated, and extent of utilization of the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC), including modifications in staff patterns, technical processing organization, and procedures resulting from network participation. A collection of source documents includes: (1) reclassification plans and procedures from University of Utah, University of Maryland, Dartmouth College, and University of Connecticut; (2) reclassification flow charts from Middlebury College and University of Maryland; (3) a letter to all members of the faculty at University of North Carolina; (4) a flowchart of monograph cataloging procedures prior to OCLC from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and analyses of cataloging costs; (5) expenses for card production, cataloging, and end processing at Harvard; (6) the by-products of reclassification from Case Institute of Technology; (7) procedures for reclassification of active Dewey serials; (8) decisions to be made regarding changeover to Library of Congress classification; and (9) a 14-item reclassification bibliography.
