Methods of Scheduling Salaries for Teachers. ERS Report. Second Edition.
Educational Research Service, Arlington, VA.
This document analyzes the composition and structure of various salary schedules for teachers currently used by public school systems. An overview of features found in teacher salary schedules is provided, including discussions on the basic structure of the schedule, methods of initial placement and advancement on the schedule, and salary supplements. Methods of changing teacher salary schedules are also examined. The second section consists of 17 tables summarizing the distributions of salaries scheduled for teachers and certain relevant administrative provisions found in those school systems responding to the National Survey of Salaries and Wages in Public Schools (1983-84). Figures are also provided for the highest degree level recognized, and for salary schedules derived from an index, both according to enrollment group. The final section consists of specific examples of different types of salary schedules, along with examples of merit or incentive plans. An annotated bibliography of ERS publications on public school employee compensation and merit pay is included. (TE)
