Using Poetry to Teach Reading and Language Arts: A Handbook for Elementary School Teachers.
Smith, Richard J.
Intended for elementary school teachers, this guide is designed to help them discover the power of poetry for teaching reading and other language arts. The discussions in the first three chapters focus on the "why" of using poetry for language arts instruction and offer a number of suggestions for teaching the language arts to meet a variety of specific objectives. Chapters 4 and 5 consist of poems written for students by the author, with the poems in chapter 4 most appropriate for students in grades one through three, and those in chapter 5 most appropriate for students in grades four through six. Immediately following each poem is a brief description of how the author came to write it and a complete lesson plan. (HTH)
