Educational Plan, Chapter 1 Elementary Reading Program Description, Performance Objectives and Tests. Revised.
Des Moines Public Schools, IA.
The skills and concepts described in this kindergarten through grade eight reading program guide emphasize the following: (1) teachers' expectations for and attitudes toward students affect student performance, (2) students' self-concepts and expectations are related to their achievement, (3) children learn in different ways and at different rates, (4) the concept of readiness operates at all stages of learning, (5) providing instruction at a level for which the learner is ready will enhance learning, (6) individualized programs are the best means to achieve improvement, and (7) immediate reinforcement of appropriate responses enhances learning. The guide identifies 13 achievement levels and 4 main skill areas--vocabulary, word analysis, comprehension, and oral reading--and stresses the language skills of listening, speaking, and writing. In addition, the guide provides approximately 10 performance objectives for each reading level as well as a pretest and posttest for each reading skill. The contents of the guide are divided into the following sections: educational plan, informal phonics test, strategies in early childhood, Systematic Approach to Reading Improvement (SARI), and objectives for SARI performance, listening and language, vocabulary, comprehension, word analysis, and study skills.
