A Handbook for Conducting Workshops on the Counseling Needs of the Elderly.
Ganikos, Mary L.; And Others
This handbook, written for counselor educators, first presents a brief overview of the Special Training Project on Counseling the Aging, funded by the Administration on Aging to produce training materials on counseling the elderly for use in preservice or inservice programs. The remainder of the handbook serves as a guide for conducting and organizing workshops that will help participants identify feelings about their own aging, clarify their attitudes about aging in general, call public and professional attention to the potential counseling needs of older people, and help dispel the common myths and stereotypes about older people. A sample outline for a 1-day workshop is provided, along with experiential activities, a resource guide, and a procedural checklist for organizing and conducting a workshop. The handbook also includes guidelines for the workshop leader, intended to provide a framework for the kinds of information the leader should have before attempting to conduct such a workshop. The annotated resource guide deals with organizations and agencies, bibliographies, directories, training manuals, books and articles, periodicals, pamphlets, film catalogs, summer institutes on aging, and guides for funding.
